K-5 Youth Cross Country
Get outside, get moving, and discover the trails around Salem!
Salem Youth Cross Country introduces K–5th grade runners to the fundamentals of cross country running in a fun, supportive, and age-appropriate environment.
Participants will build endurance, learn pacing, and gradually increase their running distance while learning to listen to their bodies and develop healthy training habits. Runners will work toward personal goals such as completing their first mile and eventually building toward a 5K.
Each week will feature a different local trail or outdoor area when possible, giving participants the opportunity to explore Salem while learning important trail and outdoor safety skills, including staying with their group, following marked trails, preparing for changing weather, understanding trail hazards, and respecting wildlife and the environment.
The program will also introduce the difference between training and racing, different types of running workouts, and the importance of tracking personal progress rather than simply competing against others. When opportunities arise, participants may also take part in simple trail stewardship activities, such as trail cleanup and learning how to care for the places where we run.
The program will conclude with a fun, modified cross country challenge where runners can put their skills to the test and compare their progress from the beginning of the season.
Parents are welcomed and encouraged to participate alongside their children!
We are also looking for volunteers to assist Coach Evan!
The trial is to allow our coaches to understand the pacing and endurance level of the kids for the rest of the season.
our Fall/Winter season will be short and will start back up in early spring!
